Caustic burn

A caustic burn is a chemical burn to the eyes, usually the result of it coming into contact with an irritant, such as an acid or alkaline.

The use of soft lenses as a bandage to protect the cornea following a trauma is well established. The lens offers immediate relief from pain and can permit healing to take place without the irritation or mechanical insult that the lids provide. In the past, high water content lenses were used, but now silicone hydrogel lenses can be produced with a high water content (74%). They provide the same protection but allow more oxygen to reach the damaged tissue and facilitate healing.
